Achieving a remarkable comprehensiveness, it describes women's participation in the war, evaluates changes in their education in the late eighteenth century, describes the novels and histories women read and wrote, and analyzes their status in law and society. Women of the Republic is the result of a seven-year search for women's diaries, letters, and legal records. "I have Don as much to Carrey on the warr as maney that Sett Now at the healm of government," wrote one impoverished woman, and she was right. Recruiters, whether patriot or tory, found men more willing to join the army when their wives and daughters could be counted on to keep the farms in operation and to resist enchroachment from squatters. Civilian women were spies, fund raisers, innkeepers, suppliers of food and clothing. The "women of the army" toiled in army hospitals, kitchens, and laundries. Previous histories have rarely recognized that the battle for independence was also a woman's war. Women of the Republic views the American Revolution through women's eyes. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Bloom the western canonInstead, all the canon can teach “is the proper use of one’s own solitude.” As for what he called “the School of Resentment”-the motley crowd of feminists, African-Americanists and the like responsible, in his view, for the “Balkanization” of literary studies-Bloom devoted much of his own solitude to denounce them.īloom’s book appeared shortly after I started my career as a university professor. In his uncompromising defense of the great literary works of Western civilization, Bloom denied any political or ideological purpose. In 1994, the industry was given a shot of adrenalin by the publication of Harold Bloom’s The Western Canon. I now ask myself, with horror, how it is that I never understood the horrified response of so many of my students.Ĭriticism of the Western canon has long been a cottage industry among American academics. As a professor of humanities, I have often taught this novella. They do so, in part, because they describe our collective response to the nature of his death-a policeman’s knee driven into his neck for nearly 10 minutes while Floyd struggled to breathe.īut they also keep returning to my mind because they are the well-known words from Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness. “The horror! The horror!” Ever since George Floyd’s death, those four words continue to run through my mind. The connection between the two women captivated her and she wanted to find out more about the generations of women who kept the lights in America. The author discovered Ida Lewis who was known as America’s Grace Darling. Some of the place names are different now to what they were then: Harker’s Rock is now known as Big Harcar and North Sunderland is known as Seahouses. There was a suggestion that she formed a romantic relationship wit a young man from the area who visited her at Longstone and this captivated Harriet’s imagination. She wasn’t just the heroine we know and love today, but a woman like any other with her own needs and views. How did she live in the confined space that was her lighthouse home. she wanted to dig deeper to find out who Grace Darling really was. Hazel Gaynor explains in her author note that she was very keen to write about this remarkable lady. MichaelsIn his work, Watkins further theorizes that ancient landmarks along ley lines were deliberately constructed by men for the purpose of lining the trade routes, which is questionable, as many of such sites are naturally situated in the areas difficult for being simply reached by a human-being, such as mounts, islands and bogs (Burns 2011 Serena 2018). Such sites are usually geographically higher than other areas around them, and some, especially in England and France, feature prominent Christian monuments but usually constructed over more ancient ruins (Burns 2011). In 1925, he published his remarks in the book The Old Straight Track, where he proposes that ancient monuments are linked by a network of intersecting straight and measurable tracks ( Ibid.). Amateur archaeologist, Alfred Watkins, discovered in 1921 that ancient features and structures across the English landscape appear to be arranged on straight ley lines ( Ibid.). All around the world, mankind built extraordinary structures on powerful sites, and although they can be separated by large distances and thousands of years, they are simultaneously interconnected all over the planet by invisible paths, similar to latitudinal and longitudinal lines, and commonly known as the world grid (Burns 2011 Serena 2018). The layout of such sites may be perceived as a sacred code created for unknown reasons by ancient civilizations. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Grealy autobiography of a faceThe book can be depressing at times, and then joyful as Lucy goes on adventures with fellow patients at the hospital. She goes through a point in time and wonders if she can ever get anyone to love her. Lucy faces what many would think of as horrific surgeries, taunts, and illness, yet she continued on. The main themes of this book include overcoming obstacles, dealing with insecurities, and finding ones’ way in life. The story follows Lucy into early adulthood and discusses the lessons she learns along the way. The story chronicles Lucy’s time from the age of a healthy nine year-old girl, to spending most of upper elementary and middle school in the hospital, reentering middle school looking different and then facing high school peers and believing she will never be viewed as attractive. However, the normalcy of Lucy’s life soon changes when Lucy develops cancer. Lucy tells a story in which the reader first sees a very healthy and active nine year-old girl. One can easily picture her as a care-free nine year old wrestling with the neighborhood boys. The author, Lucy Grealy, has a way with words. It is a story of courage, depression, maturity, and overcoming great obstacles. Would people stare? Would people ask questions or quickly look the other way? The novel Autobiography of a Face is one woman’s story of living with only half of a face for most of her life. Imagine walking through the supermarket and seeing a woman with only part of a face. Paul Tremblay: I’ve been hanging in there, but have aged five years in the one-plus. Janelle Janson: How have you been holding up during the pandemic? What is the first thing you want to do once things safely open up? He was kind enough to answer a few questions for me in the spring of 2021. In this collection, Paul experiments with structure, narratives, metafiction, and reimagined worlds. After each story, I flipped to the end of the book for his explanations of each one. While I was reading these stories I felt as if Paul was taking me on a trip through his imagination and thought process. And one of the best short story collections I’ve read recently is Growing Things and Other Stories. I recently finished reading Disappearance at Devil’s Rock and it swallowed me whole. One of my favorite books–the book that shattered my heart–is The Cabin at the End of the World. I adore A Head Full of Ghosts because it was my gateway drug into Paul’s writing and once I’d devoured it I was hungry for more. His intensely atmospheric writing style, exceptional characterization, and his knack for seamlessly blending genres are just a few of the elements that make him such a talented writer. Tremblay’s books grabbed me from the get-go. Whether you’re an eight year-old reading her first Stephen King or a forty-something reading her first Paul Tremblay, you just know. There are times in your life when you know you’re reading a brilliant author. |
